Exodus is an American thrash metallic band formed in 1979 in Richmond, California.^[one] Their current lineup consists of guitarists Gary Holt and Lee Altus, bassist Jack Gibson, drummer Tom Hunting, and atomic number 82 vocalist Steve "Zetro" Souza. In that location are no original members left in Exodus other than Hunting, who has departed from the ring twice, in 1989 and 2004, merely rejoined in 2007. Exodus is also known for including guitarist Kirk Hammett in its initial lineup; he eventually left the band in 1983 to join Metallica as Dave Mustaine's replacement. The critical praise given to Fabulous Disaster garnered attention from major labels, including Capitol Records, with whom Exodus signed in 1989 and released two albums for the characterization: Bear on Is Imminent (1990) and Forcefulness of Addiction (1992). Germination and early on years (1979–1984) [edit]

Guitarist Gary Holt has been a member of Exodus since 1981, and is the only fellow member to have performed on all of the ring's albums.

The initial lineup of Exodus was formed in the late 1970s by guitarists Kirk Hammett and Tim Agnello, drummer/vocalist Tom Hunting, and singer Keith Stewart, while they attended high school together.^[17] The band added bass guitarist Carlton Melson in 1980, and the quintet began making a name for themselves playing backyard parties and various school functions. They played mostly cover songs in the vein of 1970s hard stone and new moving ridge of British heavy metallic (NWOBHM) acts but as well adult some of their own original songs. Stewart soon left the band and Hunting became the band's sole singer for some time. Carlton Melson was replaced in 1981 by bass guitarist Jeff Andrews.^[18] Tim Agnello would also leave the group, moving to New York City and staying involved in the music industry as a guitar role player, managing director, and writer.^[19] This left Exodus to perform as a power trio until a replacement was constitute in Hammett's friend and Exodus roadie Gary Holt.^[20]

Baloff became the band's lead vocalist and the quintet recorded a 3-track demo tape in 1982 consisting of the songs "Whipping Queen", "Death and Domination" and "Warlord", a release which would be Hammett's only recording with Exodus until 2014. The band's music began to contain elements of hardcore punk into their NWOBHM roots, and Exodus was considered a pioneer of the Bay Expanse thrash metallic scene. In Nov 1982, Exodus opened a show at San Francisco'southward Quondam Waldorf venue for Metallica,^[21] a then-relatively unknown (and unsigned) band from Los Angeles. Every bit the band began playing more shows in Bay Area clubs, they gained a large, fervent fan base known for their fierce concert behavior.

In early 1983, Hammett left Exodus to join Metallica on the recommendation of managing director / producer Marking Whitaker, leaving Gary Holt to effectively take creative control of the band. Bonded Past Blood and rise in popularity (1984–1991) [edit]

Whilst Bonded By Blood is considered a highly influential thrash metallic album today, critics have regarded the delay in its release as having hindered the impact the album could accept had. As Allmusic reviewer Eduardo Rivadavia would after write in his review for the album: "Had it been released immediately afterwards it was recorded in 1984, Exodus' Bonded past Claret might be regarded today alongside Metallica's Impale 'Em All as one of the landmark albums responsible for launching the thrash metal wave."^[22] Exodus promoted the anthology by going on bout with Venom and Slayer. Four songs from their functioning of Apr 5, 1985 at Studio 54 in New York Urban center were filmed and released on dwelling house video as Combat Tour Live: The Ultimate Revenge. Vocaliser Steve "Zetro" Souza, who replaced Paul Baloff, was a member of Exodus from 1986 to their first breakup in 1994, and once more from 2002 to 2004. He rejoined the band in one case again in 2014.

Shortly after touring for Bonded by Blood was complete, Paul Baloff was fired from the ring allegedly due to his beliefs related to alcohol and substance abuse. He was replaced by Steve "Zetro" Souza, who had previously been the lead vocalist for Legacy, an early incarnation of boyfriend Bay Surface area thrashers Testament. Baloff went on to form the band Piranha in 1987.

Exodus' line-upward remained stable for the recording of their side by side two albums, and the underground success attained with Bonded by Blood would lead to the group's signing to Sony/Combat Records, who released the band's 2nd effort Pleasures of the Flesh in Oct 1987. Fabulous Disaster, the group'southward third full-length album, was released in January 1989. A music video for the song "The Toxic Waltz" would receive consistent rotation on MTV's Headbangers Brawl.^[23] Promotion for the album included Exodus embarking on the Headbangers Ball Bout with Anthrax and Helloween, which brought the band to a wider audience. Early on in the bout, drummer Tom Hunting left the band for health and personal reasons. Vio-lence drummer Perry Strickland was rapidly brought into the fold every bit a temporary replacement for the balance of the tour.^[24] Drummer John Tempesta would fill the position on a permanent basis until the band's showtime breakup in 1993. Despite being released on a major label, Impact Is Imminent was not as successful as Fabulous Disaster and debuted at No. 137 on the Billboard 200.^[26] Until the release of Claret In, Claret Out in 2014, Impact Is Imminent would be Exodus' final anthology to enter the charts.^[26] Exodus spent the latter half of 1990 touring in support of the album with Suicidal Tendencies and Pantera in the U.S. and in Europe with Flotsam and Jetsam, Vio-lence and Forbidden.

In 1991, the band released their first live album, Good Friendly Vehement Fun, which was recorded during their 1989 bout.

Strength of Addiction, hiatus, and temporary reunion (1991–2000) [edit]

Jack Gibson joined Exodus in 1997 as bass guitarist and has been with the grouping ever since.

After the release of Good Friendly Violent Fun, the band toured sporadically for a yr. Bass guitarist McKillop was replaced by Michael Butler before the group recorded and released their next studio album titled Force of Habit in 1992. This anthology was something of a departure from the band'southward signature audio, containing several slower, "heavier" songs with less accent on the thrash aspect of their older cloth. Departure of Souza, new members and Shovel Headed Kill Machine (2004–2006) [edit]

Vocalist Rob Dukes was one of three new members to join Exodus in 2005. He was part of the band until 2014.

Steve Souza in one case again left the band due to business and personal differences in 2004.^[xxx] This led to a feud between himself and Gary Holt, who after issued a statement in which he was heavily critical of Souza, claiming he had suddenly left the band while on bout only a day before they were due to leave for a show in Mexico Urban center.^[31] In retrospective accounts, both Holt^[20] and Souza stated that the reasons for the split were primarily financial: Souza had a total fourth dimension job equally a marriage carpenter having to care for his family, simply his managers posed him an ultimatum as a result of his continued absence from his day task due to touring.^[32]

In 2005, Rick Hunolt left the band to focus on his family.^[35] He was replaced past Pagan guitarist Lee Altus. Reunion with Tom Hunting and the Exhibit albums (2007–2013) [edit]

Tom Hunting returned to the band in March 2007 in time to record and release their 8th studio album The Atrocity Exhibition... Exhibit A. In April 2009, Exodus embarked on a co-headlining N American tour with Kreator and also featuring Belphegor, Warbringer, and Epicurean. Exodus provided the voices of the customers at the Duncan Hills Coffee Shop and five of the sick people in Cartoon Network's Metalocalypse.

Exodus released a re-recording of their 1985 debut album Bonded by Claret entitled Permit In that location Exist Blood in 2008. Gary Holt released the following statement about the band'south decision to revisit their debut album: "After many years in the planning and discussion phase, we accept finally completed the re-recording of 'Bonded By Blood'. The anthology Exhibit B: The Human Status was recorded in northern California with British producer Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Kreator) and released on Nuclear Boom Records in May 2010.^[36] The ring were included on Megadeth's Rust in Peace 20th Anniversary tour along with Testament. Exodus was featured on the cover of Decibel mag's June 2010 issue, with a feature article on them.

Guitarist Lee Altus has been a member of Exodus since 2005, when he replaced longtime guitarist Rick Hunolt.

Drummer Tom Hunting is the but remaining original fellow member of Exodus, with the exception of ii sabbaticals from 1989 to the band'south first reunion in 1997, and over again from 2005 to 2007.

Exodus co-headlined with Kreator, Suicidal Angels and Death Angel on the Thrashfest bout in late 2010 and were one of the headlining bands at Wacken Open Air 2011.

Exodus toured with Rob Zombie and Slayer in 2011 on their Hell on Globe tour equally the opening act. On February 4, 2012 a Paul Baloff Memorial Reunion Concert was held at the Oakland Metro Opera Firm. Former and current Exodus members in attendance included Kirk Hammett, Rick Hunolt, Gary Holt, Jeff Andrews, Lee Altus, Rob Dukes, Tom Hunting and Jack Gibson. It was the offset time they had all played together since 1983. The ring was confirmed for the Graspop Festival^[39] and for the Hellfest in June 2012. Multiple thrash metal bands, including Testament,^{[85] [86]} Death Affections,^[86] Vio-lence,^[86] Flotsam and Jetsam,^[84] Heathen,^[87] Arms,^[88] Havok,^[89] and Evile,^[90] likewise as other bands such as Darkthrone, Fear Factory, Eyehategod and Primal Fearfulness,^[84] have cited Exodus every bit an influence or inspiration to their music.

"Large Four" debate [edit]

VH1 stated, "Much is made of Thrash's Large Four: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. True devotees know, still, that Large Five is the bodily proper effigy and that Exodus is the band that completes the quintet."^[94] Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian also stated that, "People talk near the 'Big Four' all the time, but back so it was actually the 'Big Five' considering Exodus were just every bit of import and just as influential as everybody else." Megadeth founder Dave Mustaine said in a 1990 interview that, in his point of view, the "Big Iv" were Exodus, Slayer, Metallica and Megadeth, calculation that "Exodus are a much improve band – I really similar Exodus. Gary Holt and Rick Hunolt are really keen guitar players. I like Scott Ian, just anyone else in that band kind of bores me. Having a disco thing is not what I think having a metal band is all well-nigh, and that guy had the audacity to say that he and I should together! I felt similar saying what are yous planning to exercise? Open a disco fashion store?"^[95]

Along with Ian and Mustaine,^{[96] [97]} Holt has agreed that Exodus should be included in the "Big Five" of thrash metal because they "were there at the commencement of thrash metal with Metallica in the real early '80s. Same thing with Megadeth because Mustaine was a role of Metallica's nativity and he also created Megadeth."^[98] Frontman Steve "Zetro" Souza has stated that the fact that Exodus was not included in the "Large Four" does not bother him, "I've heard that term many times and it doesn't actually matter to me. It's not the truth. There'due south them, and Overkill, Testament and Exodus. You could too talk about Kreator, Sodom and Destruction, if yous want to get downwardly to it. It doesn't carp me — I'grand content where I'one thousand at."^[99]
